like a moronic quarter-life crisis freak, i took the money box into a hobby shop last week and got hold of one of these silly new things which have become much cheap(er) recently. i was about to walk out with a lesser car when i saw THIS on the wall and shat my pants. the video does not do the pace and explosiveness (on bitumen) credit. its slightly disturbing, such is the instant torque.

http://www.youtube.c...h?v=6n7XyYP55is (my car)

http://www.youtube.c...h?v=CyIdlqf8I_Y (my car)

http://www.youtube.c...6ssLpgky5E&NR=1 (different car but brushless)

http://www.youtube.c...feature=related (brushless quarter mile)

they told me that these massive new brushless motors just shamed the nitro cars these days and i thought, yeah whatever, its less messy so i took one home cheap. opted for the double lipo battery pack giving it 14.8V. Sweeeeeet shit! this thing is not a toy!

it weighs a massive 5kg loaded and will stand on its rear wheels while getting to about 95-100kmh in a second or so. (quicker than if you run it with the 11volt lipo, or NiMh option)
i need to put some thicker goop into its centre diff, and slightly thicker oil into the shocks.

the scariest bit is that all of this madness is controlled through some sort of electronic 'soft start' mechanism so that the evil motor doesn't literally tear the car apart.

its wheels go skinny as they spin up in sheer madness. it can flick bitumen stones onto real cars from a hundred yards or so :D

i'm getting run times of about 15-20 mins or so from a charge which is waaay more than enough. never used my second double pack which has been in waiting. the manic nature of the thing makes regular rests and stops necessary for the sake of sanity.

i'm busy setting its suspension matrix and preloads etc

suddenly, the lunatic rantings of the busa bloke on the mountain about the next gen busa being fully electric send shivers up my spine.

Jimmy

ps: i want to know - could i be booked by the cops for shattering the speed limit, or driving like a hoon with one of these things on a public road?

Yeah, last time i (ever) had one was in the early to mid 80's, though i was a young brat  . imagine if they'd had forums back then? a young Jimmy would have had the cattle prod probing some dangling bollocks  .

so, more like one-third-life crisis or something....just not half

the Chinese market has made this stuff so cheap and easy its crazy. it'll probably be landfill in a month or so

I got my son a Tamiya Durga 4WD, I fitted a brushless motor and the thing is just INSANE ! Posted Image It just keeps blowing up diff's because we keep using it on the tar in the cul-de-sac. You would be mad to buy a glow plug one, the brushless motors are reliable, quiet and so so FAST
The tyres are bald now just like the one in this video.

the owner of the small shop where i got it did a quick calculation, and extimated the car to put out around 650-800 watts depending on battery packs. if thats the case, thats roughly what tour de-france champs like indurain or hinault and armstrong put out at their 'peak power' on a dyno :D

if its ok mate, i might just copy and paste my PM response to another orgster.

its called a 1/8 GV BL Cage in Australia. its pretty new, and i've even seen it appear at mr toys toyworld on their 'top shelf' for 600 bucks all up (but without the exy batteries or charger) fully assembled.

i got mine from Capalaba in brisbane at Budget Hobbies. cant find it on their site, but they will speak to you about it.

http://www.budgethobbies.com.au/

they are a small but brilliant shop with the best prices and high turnover. 500 bucks from there, list price with a radio. they have a web site and they would be happy to post it i'm sure, if you checked it out somewhere else first to see if you want one.

the batteries are 59bucks each for a 4000 capacity 7.4V and you will need two piggybacked to get the most from the car. you need to use lipo batteries with this car.

a bloke called shannon works at the shop and he still races nitro cars, but says that these new brushless cars will just destroy the nitro cars. the nitro cars really need to wind up, while the brushless ones can have a one speed (no) gearbox and just explode. obviously much cleaner too.

they told me the car would be shockingly quick with the double lipo pack, but that didn't prepare me for the explosiveness or violence of it. you really have to be a bit careful with the throttle most of the time.

the steering ratio automatically slows down as the car gets to speed. all good stuff. heaps of spares in the shop i went to. including some stupid looking massive truggy wheels i want to put on.

not alot of stuff on them on the net yet. this car sells as an XTM Racing Rail in the usa. still a new product. you can google that too.

its also much bigger and heavier than you'd think. a genuine 1/8th buggy.

the radio that seems to come with them all is not digital like some modern ones, or the usa one, but works well. you can get a full digital Spektrum radio set for it for 160bucks or so.

you can get really fast full kit cars or buggies which are smaller and half the price. nearly as quick, but when i saw this i got it. the other car i was about to get was a brushless HBX rocket pro which is a 1/10th scale car and has plummeted to 250bucks for everything except battery and charger (not updated on their site)! it wouldn't be that much slower.

the trick is to get a good multi charger and lipo batteries for these cars. thats where the only hassle will lie, and its not that bad if you have good nerdy hobby advice. the voltage of lipo batteries doesn't drop under load like other batteries, so these cars won't shut down into limp mode, and they're much faster with lipos. i was initially sent away with the wrong battery pack to try, and the car was very quick for 20 seconds (totally satisfied with its pace), then went into limp mode to protect what it thought was a low running lipo. the car was smarter than we thought. the lipo gives the car double the grunt. double quick. astonishing. i couldn't imagine it being faster than it was. hold it firmly in the air by its full roll cage in one hand and floor the throttle and the car will try to twist your arm off, and the tyres look as though they are about to disintegrate so elongated do they become.

apparently the nitro vs brushless "performance" arguement was completely settled a few years ago, and i didn't even notice! for pure performance, brushless destroys the nitro. nitro is still massively enjoyable for its followers, but we have our 14s for stinky tinkering. brushless cars are totally banned from nitro events.

the car has massive dual cooling fans on its motor and 120 amp control unit. full metal gears. all servos and everything bolted in place included. i have done cartwheels with the car on bitumen at about 60kmh to no affect. its a tuff thing and thats how it looks. massive adjustability/chassis tuning ability. no different from a full sized track car.

i'm absolutely no expert at this stuff. just picked up a few bits when getting the car. over and out.

Jimmy

.....my car with radio and everything built was 495$

i got a lipro quad6 multi charger 170$ with a 50$ power supply. can use from cars lighter too. i got this because i can do 4 packs at once of any type. i have a big heli as well wich can take a camera. 4Xcharger highly recommended, can charge anything. there may be a couple of leads you need and thats it. this charger has a brain so it will balance your lipos as they charger and not blow them up. its fully auto.

i got 4X 2cell lipo 4000 7.4 volt batteries at 59 bucks each. this is where it can blow out a bit, with charger and batteries, but thats ok. run time is fantastic.

Ahh but the question is Jimmy, is your new toy quicker up the mountain than a 14? ;)
It's not dirt, it's a biodegradable stealth & anti-theft coating...

there is one famous smooth and very twisting section in particular where the photographers hide. the car would be quicker here. a road slicked rc car would be quicker again. its got me wondering, they would both be far quicker i think. controlling it would be another matter. i drove it deeeep into a hedge the other day at high speed. pretty much the ideal barrier. it was an arms length in, unharmed.

also, the climb from the western side of the mtn would be very interesting with its many 20kmh posted corners and 20% gradients up to 700m altitude. driving it as a pillion on a bike would be the way to go.

this is a truggy, not a track car. though most roads are not smooth enuf for track cars anyway.

We never raced an RC car against a bus while steering it on the bus when I was at school ;)
Catch team on a pushbike was deployed incase we lost sight of the cars.

Doesn't look like any truggy i've seen Jimmy ... are you sure?

Roads not smooth enough aren't the problem mate, it's any small pebbles or branches that will launch a road car high into the air ... and I mean launch ... very high. 4/5 mm ground clearance is not much.

Want one!

I'd probably be shite though :(

Thiscame up on my recommended. Thought was pretty good - note the back tyres; how they deform at speed!
