So now for the details Jimmy ... Is it a ready to run kit including servos, receiver, controller & battery? How much?
if its ok mate, i might just copy and paste my PM response to another orgster.
its called a 1/8 GV BL Cage in Australia. its pretty new, and i've even seen it appear at mr toys toyworld on their 'top shelf' for 600 bucks all up (but without the exy batteries or charger) fully assembled.
i got mine from Capalaba in brisbane at Budget Hobbies. cant find it on their site, but they will speak to you about it.
http://www.budgethobbies.com.au/
they are a small but brilliant shop with the best prices and high turnover. 500 bucks from there, list price with a radio. they have a web site and they would be happy to post it i'm sure, if you checked it out somewhere else first to see if you want one.
the batteries are 59bucks each for a 4000 capacity 7.4V and you will need two piggybacked to get the most from the car. you need to use lipo batteries with this car.
a bloke called shannon works at the shop and he still races nitro cars, but says that these new brushless cars will just destroy the nitro cars. the nitro cars really need to wind up, while the brushless ones can have a one speed (no) gearbox and just explode. obviously much cleaner too.
they told me the car would be shockingly quick with the double lipo pack, but that didn't prepare me for the explosiveness or violence of it. you really have to be a bit careful with the throttle most of the time.
the steering ratio automatically slows down as the car gets to speed. all good stuff. heaps of spares in the shop i went to. including some stupid looking massive truggy wheels i want to put on.
not alot of stuff on them on the net yet. this car sells as an XTM Racing Rail in the usa. still a new product. you can google that too.
its also much bigger and heavier than you'd think. a genuine 1/8th buggy.
the radio that seems to come with them all is not digital like some modern ones, or the usa one, but works well. you can get a full digital Spektrum radio set for it for 160bucks or so.
you can get really fast full kit cars or buggies which are smaller and half the price. nearly as quick, but when i saw this i got it. the other car i was about to get was a brushless HBX rocket pro which is a 1/10th scale car and has plummeted to 250bucks for everything except battery and charger (not updated on their site)! it wouldn't be that much slower.
the trick is to get a good multi charger and lipo batteries for these cars. thats where the only hassle will lie, and its not that bad if you have good nerdy hobby advice. the voltage of lipo batteries doesn't drop under load like other batteries, so these cars won't shut down into limp mode, and they're much faster with lipos. i was initially sent away with the wrong battery pack to try, and the car was very quick for 20 seconds (totally satisfied with its pace), then went into limp mode to protect what it thought was a low running lipo. the car was smarter than we thought. the lipo gives the car double the grunt. double quick. astonishing. i couldn't imagine it being faster than it was. hold it firmly in the air by its full roll cage in one hand and floor the throttle and the car will try to twist your arm off, and the tyres look as though they are about to disintegrate so elongated do they become.
apparently the nitro vs brushless "performance" arguement was completely settled a few years ago, and i didn't even notice! for pure performance, brushless destroys the nitro. nitro is still massively enjoyable for its followers, but we have our 14s for stinky tinkering. brushless cars are totally banned from nitro events.
the car has massive dual cooling fans on its motor and 120 amp control unit. full metal gears. all servos and everything bolted in place included. i have done cartwheels with the car on bitumen at about 60kmh to no affect. its a tuff thing and thats how it looks. massive adjustability/chassis tuning ability. no different from a full sized track car.
i'm absolutely no expert at this stuff. just picked up a few bits when getting the car. over and out.
