Tom Tom Rider Mobile Water Container

On the way to MCR1 OZ meet my brand new rider filled with water on its first trip, so much in fact that it ran out of the sd card flap and stained the label on the card. Returned the unit to the supplier 3 days later and was still able to shake water out of it to show the salesman and the first question this moron asks "Did you submerge it sir?

"Well actually no, Dickhead as I purchased
a Zumo for my underwater motorbike and it doesn't leak "

After I blew a fuse at him he agreed that the unit was faulty and was going to exchange it for me but he would have to check with TomTom first and they said send it back for them to look at it. It took 4 weeks. They use a servive coy in Aus, not even tomtom.

After 4 weeks they inform me that there is no fault with the unit and sent it back and expected me to just take it. They have since been informed that they can stick it where the sun don't shine and that I will not accept anything less than a new unit.

Rang to get the repair number from the supplier and was told that tomtom agree that the unit would be exchanged
and i asked if it was a new one and was told that it was a reconditioned, whatever that means, probably someone elses faulty unit dusted off from out the back.

Made a couple of calls to the Dept of Fair Trading and as far as they can see I have every right to demand a full refund as I purchased it in good faith expecting it to be IPX7 as claimed and it did not deliver which is a breach of the Act. The supplier is now getting back to tomtom now they have been told this little bit of information to see what they want to do.

This was a very simple problem that could have been solved quickly by a little PR work and replacing the unit and I would have been telling everyone how good tomtom service is instead of how it is non existent and they try every trick to avoid their responsibility. After dealing with them on this I would not buy anything from TomTom and will pass on my opinion to anybody who will listen. It takes a lot of recomendations to get people to buy something but only a few bad stories to stop them.

I am an electrical contractor and have 5 vans running around Sydney and they will become mobile billboards bagging TomTom and the supplier if this is not resolved early in the new year.

I will drive them bonkers as they do to their customers, when you call TomTom you get a call centre where some so called expert tells you that what you say happened didn't happen because the computer he is reading from says it can't

FUCK EM

TomTom should rename it the DryRider - only for use on sunny days and give you a couple of plastic bags in case it rains. mad.gif

Seems to be that once they get the money it's stiff shit, you are on your own.

bloody hell, thats bad news, my dealings with tom tom went like this.

sat nav would not boot passed the two hands screen, made the phone call and was told to remove maps load some software they emailed me then put maps back on.

computer said files corrupted and unable to move, another phone call to tom tom and they said send it back to the netherlands. The netherlands i said , yes no repair centre in the uk.

so off it went in the post, 5 days later it was back on my desk repaired with a further 6 months warantee free of charge. 5 days to get to the netherlands be repaired and get back, all free of charge, now that is bloody good service. So why are they so good with one customer and so bad with another ??? hope you get it sorted soon mate, but i for one would buy another tom tom when this one gives up, easy to use and good service.

I had no issues with the operation of the unit up until it got wet. I thought it was a great little bit of kit.

My issue is that it was brand new out of the box the week before and it gets soaked the first time it rains. I think that it was not assembled correctly in the first place thus the water problem. I have been working with electricity for 40 years and believe me water and electrons don't mix. Sure the unit dried out and it worked on the bench but 3 months from now when the circuit board cooks after the corrosion gets to work what happens then?.

It should have been replaced with a new unit as this seems to be a one off case or is it a common problem with them ?.

If I wanted a second hand one I would have bought it from Fleabay.

Ive had no probs with my unit which travelled to France and back to UK, in what i can only describe as appalling weather conditions. Torrential rain in the UK in both directions. No probs with the unit at all. Perfect.

I can only think that the faulty units were from the same batch maybe??
Only had to phone tham once and that was to ask a technical question over the use of it in the car.
Sorry to hear that some of you are not pleased with the tomtom which i think is a very good tool.

Shiney. smile.gif

PS.... HAPPY NEW YEAR. EVLYBOODY,, biggrin.gif

Seems that TomTom are dragging the chain and wouldn't make a decision as to give me a new one or repair / replace with a refurbished one.
Have had a call from Ryda.Com and they are going to replace the unit with a new one from stock. They have given mo the option of taking another Rider or a Zumo.

I thought that the rider worked well when it was dry and have wired the bike for it so will probably take another an hope for the best.

Unfortunately the TomTom Rider is known to have problems wit leakage, contactproblems between the mount and unit and a lot of hardware related issues mostly coz they cant take vibrations.

So I bought a Zumo 550... Had it for a few years now. Both on the 14 and in the Van/car. Even works on the snowmobile (-15 degrees bot -20 is no problem either).

The Zumo was not cheap... but I dont regret the choice for a minute.

I am a Dinosaur.....................much prefer maps !

Part of the excitement with riding overseas , is the planning and working out the route. And if you are unlucky enough to get lost , it all adds to the sense of achievement .

My V1 took me all over Europe with no problems - its now on my Bandit here in Canada works great - one thing you must do is occasionally take a soft toothbrush to the contacts on the mounting unit and givem a very light coating of oil - I use lipsil! otherwise would be without it espically looking for hotels in Europe!

Sorry to hear you are having problems with the TT, CBC.

Being the tight arse I am, I bought a used Garmin Nuvi 310 off eBay and installed it in a ram mount on the Burgie. It survived many rainstorms and freezing conditions during my trans - Russia ride and on at least 3 occasions it was totally flooded with 2/3rds of the screen having a large dark stain across it.

I simply switched it off and by next morning the stain had evaporated and it was working again as if nothing had happened. I think the maps are better value on the Garmin too (especially the European ones Maggy wink.gif).

I've been using a panasonic avics s1 for the last 2 years, fantastic piece of kit includes bluetooth hands free for the car & although not previewed for bikes i built a mount and have found a new use for condoms as far as waterproofing goes, its good upto 250 km/hr no vibration problems, tactile screen large enough for big fingers a bit pricey when new i paid 560 euros with the full european software, the onlt thing it doesnt do is radars but for that i have something else.
I keep looking at the tom tom rider but to be honest i think it is expensive for what it does especially as there are lots of sat nav systems on the market for approx 150 euro's which do the same or more.
